ในปี 2564 อุทยานแห่งชาติดอยอินทนนท์ ร่วมกับ
มูลนิธิไทยรักษ์ป่า องค์กรสาธารณกุศล ซึ่งก่อตั้งและ
สนับสนุนการดำเนินงานโดยบริษัท ผลิตไฟฟ้า จำกัด
(มหาชน) หรือ เอ็กโก กรุ๊ป ปรับปรุงทางเดินไม้ภายใน
เส้นทางศึกษาธรรมชาติอ่างกา โดยออกแบบให้เป็นมิตร
กับธรรมชาติ ควบคู่กับการออกแบบอารยสถาปัตย์
Angkha Nature Trail is a 320 meter-long loop
boardwalk that takes around 20-30 minutes to
complete. It is mostly flat with steep sections only
at the start and finish. Visitors should expect cool
and damp weather with occasional rain.
Doi Inthanon National Park cooperated with the
Thai Rak Pa Foundation, a charity organization
founded and supported by the Electricity Generating Public Company Limited (EGCO Group), to build the wooden boardwalks along the trail.

Water - Origin of life
ข้าวตอกฤๅษี หรือ สแฟกนัมมอส (Sphagnum sp.) เป็นพืช
ไร้ดอกจำพวกมอสส์สกุลที่มีขนาดใหญ่ที่สุดระดับโลก และเป็น
เพียงชนิดเดียวที่มีชื่อภาษาไทย เติบโตได้ดีในที่ชื้นและหนาวเย็น
ทนทานต่อการสูญเสียน้ำได้ดี เพราะปรับตัวต่อความแห้งแล้ง
ด้วยการหยุดพักการดำรงชีวิตแบบปกติไว้ชั่วคราว เมื่อสภาวะ
เหมาะสมมีน้ำมากพอจึงฟื้นคืนชีพ ในประเทศไทย แม้จะพบ
ข้าวตอกฤาษีได้ยาก แต่มีหลายสายพันธุ์ จึงเห็นเฉดสีแตกต่างกัน
ใบของข้าวตอกฤาษีมีลักษณะคล้ายฟองนํ้า สามารถขยายขนาด
ของเซลล์เพื่อรองรับน้ำได้ปริมาณมากถึง 8 เท่า ซากของข้าวตอก
ฤๅษีที่ตายแล้ว สามารถดูดซับน้ำได้ราว 20 เท่าของน้ำหนักแห้ง
ของตัวเอง จึงเปรียบเสมือนแหล่งกักเก็บน้ำ เพื่อรักษาความ
ชุ่มชื้นให้กับป่า และเป็นองค์ประกอบสำคัญของระบบนิเวศป่าพรุ

Sphagnum moss is the biggest non-flowering moss in the world.
It’s the only moss in Thailand with a local name - kaotok reusee.
It grows well in cool damp locations and even pauses growth
when moisture is low, allowing it to withstand drought conditions. There are various colored species of Sphagum moss in Thailand,
although they are found in just a few locations.
Spagnum moss can hold water like a sponge. It does this thanks
to exterior cells which can inflate in size by up to 8 times and fill
with water. When it is dried out, sphagnum moss can absorb 20
times its own weight in moisture. So, it acts like a reservoir that
can provide humidity to the forest. Sphagnum moss is an essential
component of the swamp forest, but increased temperatures
caused by climate change are expected to impact its growth and
spread.
ป่าพรุ พื้นที่ชุ่มน้ำขนาดกว่า 30 ไร่ มีสภาพรก ปกคลุมด้วย
หญ้า ไม้พุ่ม และข้าวตอกฤาษี แต่กลับเป็นระบบนิเวศที่หาได้
ยากยิ่ง รูปแบบหนึ่งของไทย น้ำในป่าพรุมีสีคล้ายน้ำชา และเป็น
กรดอ่อน เพราะมีอินทรียวัตถุย่อยสลายอยู่ในน้ำที่แช่ขังตลอด
ทั้งปี มีการไหลเวียนของน้ำอย่างช้าๆ เป็นแหล่งกักเก็บน้ำที่มี
ความสำคัญ และมีคุณภาพที่ดี
พื้นที่ด้านล่างของพรุ มีอุณหภูมิเย็นจัดราวช่องแช่แข็ง แบ่งออก
เป็นชั้นๆ ประกอบด้วยชั้นของซากพืช ซากสัตว์ที่ทับถมและย่อย
สลายอย่างช้าๆ ชั้นดินอยู่ลึกลงไปมาก ความหนาของชั้นดินพรุ

The peat swamp here at Angkha is only around 5 hectares in
area, but is filled with a wonderful confusion of grasses,
undergrowth, shrubs, and sphagnum moss, many of which
are special and hard to find in Thailand. The tea-brown
groundwater here is of low acidity due to all the fallen biomass
which decomposes very slowly. Although the water may appear
still, a steady but slow runoff keeps it from stagnating.
Under the swamp the temperature is as cool as in a refrigerator.
The surface is composed of layers of dead leaves and creatures,
all slowly decomposing. This layer is typically 7-8 cm deep and
may take 100 years to accumulate. Beneath that there lies a
deep layer of soil and further down is a layer of weathered rock
which contains some of the original parent rock.
The dead biomass inside the thick peat soil locks up a large
amount of carbon, preventing it from being released as carbon
dioxide – the primary greenhouse gas which is causing harmful
climate change. Currently, the groundwater level at Angkha
swamp is gradually decreasing, thought to result from climate
change. This is leading to loss of plant and animal species and in
the long term it will increase the chance of an underground peat
fire. A study of aquatic insect diversity found that the water quality
in the forests at Doi Inthanon was lowest during peak visitor periods, highlighting the impact of human activity on the environment.

This forest lies at more than 2,550 meters above sea level, high enough for cloud formation to occur. So the tree canopy
doesn’t need to wait for rain – it can get moisture directly from
the cloud. Thus, the forest is constantly wet and humid. At the
same time the trees release water into the air, which stimulates
cloud accumulation and subsequent rain back onto the forest.
The thick stands of trees also help to protect the forest floor
from the impact of frequentheavy rain. Their radiating roots slow
down water runoff and allow water to instead be absorbed by
the soil. When the rainy season eases, the soil gradually releases
its water to become small creeks which then flow into larger
streams to nourish life.
Forests are a critical part of the water cycle. Scientists have
found that water evaporation in hill evergreen forest can create
rain clouds faster than plain evaporation off the surface of a
water body. So the Angkha forest is an important area that can
create rain via evaporation – that is why this called ‘cloud
forest’.
พืชอิงอาศัยที่ปกคลุมหนาแน่นตามลำต้น กิ่งก้านของต้นไม้ใหญ่
มองดูราวกับต้นไม้ใส่เสื้อ คือความงดงามอันเป็นเอกลักษณ์ของ

ชุ่มชื้นกลับคืนสู่ผืนป่าจะฟื้นตัวกลับมาอีกครั้ง แต่ในปัจจุบัน
ความชื้นในพื้นที่ลดลงแม้ในฤดูฝน จึงพบมอสส์ เฟิร์น ที่ห่อหุ้ม
ลำต้นเหี่ยวแห้งและหลุดล่อนในฤดูแล้ง รวมถึงฝอยลม ซึ่งเป็น
ไลเคนที่มีความเปราะบางและอ่อนไหวต่อสภาพแวดล้อม ก็พบได้
ยากขึ้น เพราะหากมีมลพิษเพียงเล็กน้อยก็ไม่สามารถอยู่ต่อไปได้
Tree trunks and branches here are covered in epiphytes, making
it appear that the trees are wearing winter clothes and giving a
striking beauty to the cloud forest. This dense covering is a plant adaptation to the environment. Epiphytes, which include mosses, lichens and ferns, flourish in humid yet cool conditions. Their
lifecycle is simple since they can grow with moisture from the air
and a small amount of nutrients absorbed from the debris that accumulates around them. The moisture is slowly released for
the long-term benefit of the local environment.
In the dry season, the epiphytes will stop growing and their
leaves will dry and curl, but when the moisture and rains return
they resume normal life. However, current weather patterns are bringing decreased humidity all year round and we see more
dead or dried leaves every dry season. Lichen is also struggling
since it is very sensitive to environmental pollution.

ที่พบได้ที่เดียวในโลก และนกกระจิ๊ดคอเทา ที่สามารถพบได้ที่เดียว
ในประเทศไทย รวมถึงสัตว์หลากหลายชนิด เช่น สัตว์สะเทินน้ำ
สะเทินบก อย่างกบดอยอินทนนท์ และกระท่างภูพิงค์ ซึ่งพบได้
ยาก อีกทั้งเป็นชนิดพันธุ์ที่เป็นดัชนีบอกความอุดมสมบูรณ์ของ

Enjoy the charm of the 4,300-year-old primitive hill evergreen
forest, part of the Himalayan range. The high-elevation swamp
forest here at the summit of Thailand is also the water source of
the local Klang River, which later feeds into the Ping River. This
area is a miracle of nature and is rich in biodiversity.
This forest is home to many rare plants and wildlife that have adapted to the unique ecosystem, including sphagnum moss,
the biggest moss in the world, and rare ferns. A beautiful red rhododendron is the food source of the green-tailed sunbird,
which is found nowhere else in the world except here at Angkha. Thailand’s only population of ashy-throated warbler is found
here, while various amphibians such as Doi Inthanon frog and
Himalayan newt are rare species and indicators of the high quality
of the water bodies and streams in this area.

This forest lies at more than 2,550 meters above sea level, high enough for cloud formation to occur. So
the tree canopy doesn’t need to wait for rain – it
can get moisture directly from the cloud. Thus, the
forest is constantly wet and humid. At the same
time the trees release water into the air, which
stimulates cloud accumulation and subsequent rain
back onto the forest. The thick stands of trees also
help to protect the forest floor from the impact of frequentheavy rain. Their radiating roots slow down
water runoff and allow water to instead be
absorbed by the soil. When the rainy season eases,
the soil gradually releases its water to become small creeks which then flow into larger streams to nourish
life.
Forests are a critical part of the water cycle.
Scientists have found that water evaporation in hill evergreen forest can create rain clouds faster than
plain evaporation off the surface of a water body. So the Angkha forest is an important area that can create rain via evaporation – that is why this called ‘cloud forest’.

ในฤดูแล้ง พืชอิงอาศัยจะพักตัว ใบหงิกงอเหี่ยวแห้ง
เมื่อความชุ่มชื้นกลับคืนสู่ผืนป่าจะฟื้นตัวกลับมาอีกครั้ง
แต่ในปัจจุบัน ความชื้นในพื้นที่ลดลงแม้ในฤดูฝน จึงพบ
มอสส์ เฟิร์น ที่ห่อหุ้มลำต้นเหี่ยวแห้งและหลุดล่อนในฤดู
แล้ง รวมถึงฝอยลม ซึ่งเป็นไลเคนที่มีความเปราะบางและ
อ่อนไหวต่อสภาพแวดล้อม ก็พบได้ยากขึ้น เพราะหากมี
มลพิษเพียงเล็กน้อยก็ไม่สามารถอยู่ต่อไปได้
Tree trunks and branches here are covered in
epiphytes, making it appear that the trees are
wearing winter clothes and giving a striking beauty to
the cloud forest. This dense covering is a plant
adaptation to the environment. Epiphytes, which
include mosses, lichens and ferns, flourish in humid
yet cool conditions. Their lifecycle is simple since
they can grow with moisture from the air and a
small amount of nutrients absorbed from the debris
that accumulates around them. The moisture is
slowly released for the long-term benefit of the
local environment.
In the dry season, the epiphytes will stop growing
and their leaves will dry and curl, but when the
moisture and rains return they resume normal life. However, current weather patterns are bringing
decreased humidity all year round and we see more
dead or dried leaves every dry season. Lichen is
also struggling since it is very sensitive to
environmental pollution.

Thalo is a highly gifted tree able to grow in many
kinds of climates and soil types. In Thailand, it is found in the dry northeast region as well as in monsoon (high - rainfall) areas further south, such as Ranong Province. It grows equally well on flat and sloping land, at
various elevations, from beach zones up to mountain sides at 3,000 meters above sea level. Thalo thrives in porous soils, but also does well in muddy or sandy ground or around ponds and alongside waterways. Whether the land is fertile or infertile, we can find
thalo - it’s a friend to many, putting its roots down through Thailand and right across East and Southeast Asia, from China to Indonesia.

Enjoy the charm of the 4,300-year-old primitive hill
evergreen forest, part of the Himalayan range. The
high-elevation swamp forest here at the summit of
Thailand is also the water source of the local Klang River, which later feeds into the Ping River. This area
is a miracle of nature and is rich in biodiversity.
This forest is home to many rare plants and wildlife that have adapted to the unique ecosystem,
including sphagnum moss, the biggest moss in the world, and rare ferns. A beautiful red rhododendron
is the food source of the green-tailed sunbird, which
is found nowhere else in the world except here at Angkha. Thailand’s only population of ashy-throated warbler is found here, while various amphibians such
as Doi Inthanon frog and Himalayan newt are rare species and indicators of the high quality of the
water bodies and streams in this area.

ในที่ชื้นและหนาวเย็น ทนทานต่อการสูญเสียน้ำได้ดี
เพราะปรับตัวต่อความแห้งแล้ง ด้วยการหยุดพักการดำรง
ชีวิตแบบปกติไว้ชั่วคราว เมื่อสภาวะเหมาะสมมีน้ำมากพอ

Sphagnum moss is the biggest non-flowering moss
in the world. It’s the only moss in Thailand with a
local name - kaotok reusee. It grows well in cool
damp locations and even pauses growth when
moisture is low, allowing it to withstand drought
conditions. There are various colored species of
Sphagum moss in Thailand, although they are found
in just a few locations.
Spagnum moss can hold water like a sponge. It
does this thanks to exterior cells which can inflate in
size by up to 8 times and fill with water. When it is
dried out, sphagnum moss can absorb 20 times its
own weight in moisture. So, it acts like a reservoir
that can provide humidity to the forest. Sphagnum
moss is an essential component of the swamp
forest, but increased temperatures caused by
climate change are expected to impact its growth
and spread.

Placenames in Thailand often have a relation to the
local history and distinctive identity of the area. The
meaning of this forest’s name, ‘Krung Ching’, is related
to a species of palm tree that was once dominant here
– the Ching tree. The Ching tree was well-loved since
it provided valuable shelter for ancient travelers.

This location was an old resistance camp that
served as a command center and gathering point.
Cave, with its collapsed roof, provided an observation
point as well as a place to shelter from overhead
surveillance. Up to 100 people could hide in the
lower sections of the cave. The name of the cave was
‘Don Muang’.

The extremely soft and acidic soil in and nearby the
creeks, where only a few specially-adapted plants can
grow. Only trees with buttress roots and strong root
systems can anchor themselves in the soft soil and
withstand heavy flooding.
Creeks and wetland areas in the forest are home to
many forms of life, with insects being the most
prominent. Aquatic insects are central to the food
chain and have important functions in the ecosystem.

All living organisms and non-living matter have a
beneficial effect on the forest. Some creatures have
the specific role to decompose and digest the dead
biomatter into smaller elements, returning it back to
soil where it can be used as food to support the
ecosystem. Specialist decomposers include insects,
reptiles, fungi, and bacteria. Balance is crucial in the
ecosystem.

The name Rhododendron in Latin means ‘rose-colored tree’. There are 9 rhododendron species found in Thailand with 4 of
them present here on Doi Inthanon – 3 red species and one white. Rhododendrons are difficult to find in Thailand and normally only
grow at lower elevation, but here at Angkha they thrive at more
than 1,800 meters above sea level. The red rhododendron here
has a distinctive flower, shaped perfectly for the beak of the
greentailed sunbird to drink its nectar. This remarkable bird, angkhanensis, is found nowhere else in the world. Blue-throated sunbirds also stop by at these trees to drink nectar and help with pollination. There is a strong connection between flowers and
birds here.
Rhododendrons need good light so are usually found in open
areas. They can grow up to 12 meters tall. In the past this area
was dominated by rhododendron stands, but when the environment changed and taller trees began to block the sunlight, they could
not thrive. Over time they were conquered by hill evergreen
tree species that can compete better for low light.

The Thai name ‘Angkha’ (meaning ‘crow pond’) was given to
this area because the wetland here attracts many crows to come
and bathe. The whole mountain of Doi Inthanon was previously named Angkha but now the name is just used for the wetland.
Apart from the amazing natural values of this forest, there is also
a lot of cultural and historical significance. For example, the
waters of Angkha are considered sacred and were also used in
ceremonies to celebrate the transport of Buddha relics from
nearby Jomthong township to Chiang Mai. More recently, the
waters of Angkha were used in the Coronation Ceremony for King
Rama 10. Nearby there is also a shrine to remember soldiers
who passed away from a helicopter crash in the area.

The Thai name ‘Angkha’ (meaning ‘crow pond’)
was given to this area because the wetland here
attracts many crows to come and bathe. The whole
mountain of Doi Inthanon was previously named Angkha but now the name is just used for the
wetland. Apart from the amazing natural values of
this forest, there is also a lot of cultural and
historical significance. For example, the waters of Angkha are considered sacred and were also used in
ceremonies to celebrate the transport of Buddha
relics from nearby Jomthong township to Chiang
Mai. More recently, the waters of Angkha were used
in the Coronation Ceremony for King Rama 10.
Nearby there is also a shrine to remember soldiers
who passed away from a helicopter crash in the
area.

Fon San Ha Waterfall is the most beautiful waterfall
in the park. The flow of water over the waterfall varies
from season to season. These waters of the Krung
Ching Creek originate in the fertile upper forests of
Khao Luang National Park, providing water to nourish
communities downstream and ultimately send nutrients
to sustain marine life in the Thai Gulf.
ลำห้วยเล็กๆ กลางหย่อมป่า พืชพันธุ์ที่เติบโตได้
ในสภาพเช่นนี้ ต่างผ่านการคัดกรองจากธรรมชาติ
ด้วยการปรับตัว และพัฒนาแตกรากให้แผ่ออกด้าน
ข้างเพื่อยึดดินไว้ไม่ให้ล้ม ทนต่อกระแสน้ำหลากที่
รุนแรง
ในแหล่งน้ำจืด มีสิ่งมีชีวิตอาศัยอยู่มากมายหลาย
ชนิด แมลงน้ำเป็นสัตว์กลุ่มที่พบมากที่สุด นอกจาก
จะมีบทบาทต่อห่วงโซ่อาหารในระบบนิเวศน้ำจืดแล้ว
ยังเป็นดัชนีชี้วัดคุณภาพน้ำอีกด้วย
The extremely soft and acidic soil in and nearby the
creeks, where only a few specially-adapted plants can
grow. Only trees with buttress roots and strong root
systems can anchor themselves in the soft soil and
withstand heavy flooding.
Creeks and wetland areas in the forest are home to
many forms of life, with insects being the most
prominent. Aquatic insects are central to the food
chain and have important functions in the ecosystem.

Placenames in Thailand often have a relation to the
local history and distinctive identity of the area. The
meaning of this forest’s name, ‘Krung Ching’, is related
to a species of palm tree that was once dominant here
– the Ching tree. The Ching tree was well-loved since
it provided valuable shelter for ancient travelers.

“ต้นทะโล้” พันธุ์ไม้ที่เป็นเลิศในการปรับตัว ทนทานต่อทุก
สภาพพื้นที่ ทุกสภาพอากาศ ปกติทะโล้ชอบดินร่วน แต่สามารถ
เติบโตได้ในดินหลากชนิด กระทั่งดินป่าริมน้ำที่น้ำท่วมถึง ต้น
ทะโล้พบได้ทุกภาคในประเทศไทย ตั้งแต่อากาศหนาวจัด จนถึง
ร้อนจัด อุณหภูมิ 0 - 45 องศา เซลเซียส หรือในที่ฝนตกน้อย
แถบภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ ถึงฝนตกชุก ในจังหวัดระนอง
รวมถึงสภาพภูมิประเทศที่เป็นที่ราบ ที่ลาดเขาสูงชัน ตั้งแต่
ชายทะเลจนถึงยอดเขาสูง 3,000 เมตร และยังพบทะโล้ใน
ประเทศจีน ที่สภาพอากาศหนาว ไปจนถึงเกาะชวา ประเทศ
อินโดนีเซีย ที่มีฝนตกชุก
Thalo is a highly gifted tree able to grow in many kinds of climates and soil types. In Thailand, it is found in the dry northeast region as well as in monsoon (high - rainfall) areas further south, such as Ranong Province. It grows equally well on flat and sloping land, at various elevations, from beach zones up to mountain sides at 3,000 meters above sea level. Thalo thrives in porous soils, but also does well in muddy or sandy ground or around ponds and alongside waterways. Whether the land is fertile or infertile, we can find thalo - it’s a friend to many, putting its roots down through Thailand and right across East and Southeast Asia, from China to Indonesia.

This location was an old resistance camp that
served as a command center and gathering point.
Cave, with its collapsed roof, provided an observation
point as well as a place to shelter from overhead
surveillance. Up to 100 people could hide in the
lower sections of the cave. The name of the cave was
‘Don Muang’.

สลายที่กระจายตัวอยู่ทั่วผืนป่า เช่น เห็ดนานาชนิด

ค่อยๆ ผุผัง รวมถึงจุลินทรีย์อย่างราและแบคทีเรีย
ทำให้เกิดการหมุนเวียนธาตุอาหารกลับลงสู่ดิน

All living organisms and non-living matter have a
beneficial effect on the forest. Some creatures have
the specific role to decompose and digest the dead
biomatter into smaller elements, returning it back to
soil where it can be used as food to support the
ecosystem. Specialist decomposers include insects,
reptiles, fungi, and bacteria. Balance is crucial in the
ecosystem.
