Keaw Maepan Nature Trail at an elevation of
2000 meters above sealevelin. This trail is at
elevation and therefore oxygen levels are lower
than normal. People with heart conditions, high
blood pressure, hypertension, or asthma should
avoid walking this trail.


Doi Inthanon National Park cooperated with the
Thai Rak Pa Foundation, a charity organization
founded and supported by the Electricity Generating Public Company Limited (EGCO Group), to build the wooden boardwalks along the trail.

Vines are climbing plants that grow in a coiling fashion around
and between trees. They can curl and sprout new shoots left or
right to get to well-lit areas in the understory and capture sunlight.
As they race to the brightly lit upper canopy, they create pathways
for animals like squirrel and langurs to search for food and expand
their habitat.

บ้างก็เรียก ดอกคำแดง เพราะมองดูเผินๆ คล้ายพุ่มกุหลาบ และ
ลำต้นมีมอสส์ปกคลุม จนดูคล้ายมีอายุเป็นพันปี แต่แท้จริงแล้ว
กุหลาบพันปี หรือ Rhododendron arboreum เป็นพันธุ์ไม้ใน
วงศ์ Ericaceae (เอริคาซี) ซึ่งไม่เกี่ยวข้องกับกุหลาบที่เรารู้จักกัน
ทั่วไป


กุหลาบพันปี เป็นพืชที่หายากมากที่สุดชนิดหนึ่ง เพราะมีการ
กระจายพันธุ์ที่ค่อนข้างจำกัดเฉพาะในเขตอากาศหนาวเย็นบน
พื้นที่ชุ่มชื้น เช่น สันเขาหรือหน้าผา ออกดอกปีละ 1 ครั้ง ในช่วง
ปลายเดือนพฤศจิกายน ถึงต้นเดือนกุมภาพันธ์


At first glance rhododendron flowers resemble clusters of roses
and in Thai they are known as “wild roses”. Rhododendrons in
Thailand can be found only in cool and moist areas on mountain
ridges or cliffs. They flower only once a year between November
and February.

ด้วงครามอินทนนท์ หรือ ด้วงครามสีน้ำเงิน เป็นแมลงถิ่น
เดียวในไทย และเป็นสัตว์ป่าคุ้มครอง ตาม พรบ. สงวนและ
คุ้มครองสัตว์ป่า พ.ศ. 2535 พบตามป่าดิบแล้ง และป่าดิบเขา
ของดอยอินทนนท์ โดยในเส้นทางฯ กิ่วแม่ปาน จะพบมันบินร่อน
ไปมาราวกับกำลังสำรวจป่า บ้างถูกเรียกว่า เฮลิคอปเตอร์
สีน้ำเงิน


The Indigo Hill Chafer (Enoplotrupes sharpi) is a rare beetle
found only in the Inthanon area. It is protected by Thailand’s
Wildlife Preservation and Protection Act, 1992. This stunning purple
scarab is an earth-boring dung beetle which digs a burrow to lay its
eggs. It is found only in a small area of hill evergreen forest near the
Inthanon summit. If you walk on the Keaw Maepan nature trail,
look out for this coin-sized beetle flying about like a tiny helicopter
on forest patrol.

Sub-alpine meadows like this one are rare in Thailand. Only
certain kinds of small shrubs and ferns can survive on the sparse
rocky ground. The presence of Mexican devil weed shrub is
evidence of past human activity in this area.


This meadow endures severe conditions of climate and displays
a unique beauty in each season. In the rainy season, the meadow is
covered in green grass and eagle ferns, with white coloring provided
by Hogweed and yellow from St John wort. Some plants are typical
of the Himalayan mountain region. In the dry season, the meadow
turns gold from the wilting grasses and shrubs.

These rocks perched on the steep slope are the result of natural arrangement. If you look closely, the rocks do not protrude up from underground, but are thought to have simply broken off from the
nearby cliff and came to rest at this unlikely spot.


You’ll see a heart-shaped rock nearby, of similar origin, which has
become a destination for visiting couples.

ยิ่ง แต่จากการสำรวจพบกวางผาใช้ชีวิตอยู่ที่นี่มากกว่า 30 ตัว
หากลองอดทนรอคอยอย่างสงบ เราอาจได้พบกับกวางผา ซึ่งใช้
ชีวิตอิสระไปตามแนวผา


For people, cliffs are challenging and dangerous terrain, but for
goral they are ‘home sweet home’ for living and foraging. They find abundant water and can graze on grass and shrubs. Other animals
cannot enter the cliff areas so goral can live free of competition or
threat from predators. Goral are one of Thailand’s 19 reserved
wild animals.


Goral is an endangered species however there are more than 30 individuals living in this park. If you wait quietly and patiently, you
may meet the free-spirited goral and see how one of nature’s
remarkable animals’ lives in this perilous setting.

Trees in the dim and damp cloud forest are covered in epiphytes
– small plants that get most of their moisture and nutrients from the
water, dust and debris of the trees to which they cling. Epiphytes
do no harm to the tree on which they live. In fact, both gain
advantage in an example for us all about how to share benefits.
Many of these epiphytes appear to die during dry periods but in fact
they are only dormant and will revive themselves when humidity
and moisture return to their surroundings.

กุหลาบป่า หรือกุหลาบพันปี เป็นชื่อที่คนนิยมเรียกกัน
แต่บ้างก็เรียก ดอกคำแดง เพราะมองดูเผินๆ คล้ายพุ่ม
กุหลาบ และลำต้นมีมอสส์ปกคลุม จนดูคล้ายมีอายุเป็น
พันปี แต่แท้จริงแล้ว กุหลาบพันปี หรือ Rhododendron
arboreum เป็นพันธุ์ไม้ในวงศ์ Ericaceae (เอริคาซี) ซึ่ง
ไม่เกี่ยวข้องกับกุหลาบที่เรารู้จักกันทั่วไป


กุหลาบพันปี เป็นพืชที่หายากมากที่สุดชนิดหนึ่ง
เพราะมีการกระจายพันธุ์ที่ค่อนข้างจำกัดเฉพาะในเขต
อากาศหนาวเย็นบนพื้นที่ชุ่มชื้น เช่น สันเขาหรือหน้าผา
ออกดอกปีละ 1 ครั้ง ในช่วงปลายเดือนพฤศจิกายน ถึง
ต้นเดือนกุมภาพันธ์


At first glance rhododendron flowers resemble
clusters of roses and in Thai they are known as “wild roses”. Rhododendrons in Thailand can be found only
in cool and moist areas on mountain ridges or cliffs.
They flower only once a year between November and
February.

ถิ่นเดียวในไทย และเป็นสัตว์ป่าคุ้มครองตาม พรบ. สงวน
และคุ้มครองสัตว์ป่า พ.ศ. 2535 พบตามป่าดิบแล้ง และ
ป่าดิบเขาของดอยอินทนนท์ โดยในเส้นทางฯ กิ่วแม่ปาน
จะพบมันบินร่อนไปมาราวกับกำลังสำรวจป่า บ้างถูกเรียก
ว่า เฮลิคอปเตอร์สีน้ำเงิน


The Indigo Hill Chafer (Enoplotrupes sharpi) is a rare beetle found only in the Inthanon area. It is protected by Thailand’s Wildlife Preservation and Protection Act,
1992. This stunning purple scarab is an earth-boring
dung beetle which digs a burrow to lay its eggs. It is
found only in a small area of hill evergreen forest near
the Inthanon summit. If you walk on the Keaw Maepan nature trail, look out for this coin-sized beetle flying
about like a tiny helicopter on forest patrol.

sides of the Kew Mae Pan ridge is clearly seen. Lush
and fertile forest lies one way, grass and scrub the
other. The original forest has been damaged by forest
fires in the past. As a result, the top layer of fertile soil
was lost to direct sunlight, strong winds and erosion. Rainwater and soil wash down the mountain and are
lost. Contrast this with the pristine forest cover where
soil has continued to collect and absorb water,
gradually releasing for universal benefit and

Sub-alpine meadows like this one are rare in
Thailand. Only certain kinds of small shrubs and ferns can survive on the sparse rocky ground. The presence of Mexican devil weed shrub is evidence of past human activity in this area.


This meadow endures severe conditions of climate and displays a unique beauty in each season. In the rainy season, the meadow is covered in green grass and eagle ferns, with white coloring provided by Hogweed and yellow from St John wort. Some plants are typical of the Himalayan mountain region. In the dry season, the meadow turns gold from the wilting grasses and shrubs.

Vines are climbing plants that grow in a coiling
fashion around and between trees. They can curl and sprout new shoots left or right to get to well-lit areas in the understory and capture sunlight. As they race to
the brightly lit upper canopy, they create pathways for animals like squirrel and langurs to search for food and expand their habitat.

These rocks perched on the steep slope are the
result of natural arrangement. If you look closely, the
rocks do not protrude up from underground, but are thought to have simply broken off from the nearby cliff
and came to rest at this unlikely spot.


You’ll see a heart-shaped rock nearby, of similar
origin, which has become a destination for visiting
couples.

มากกว่า 30 ตัว หากลองอดทนรอคอยอย่างสงบ เราอาจ
ได้พบกับกวางผา ซึ่งใช้ชีวิตอิสระไปตามแนวผา


For people, cliffs are challenging and dangerous
terrain, but for goral they are ‘home sweet home’ for
living and foraging. They find abundant water and can
graze on grass and shrubs. Other animals cannot enter
the cliff areas so goral can live free of competition or
threat from predators. Goral are one of Thailand’s 19 reserved wild animals.


Goral is an endangered species however there are
more than 30 individuals living in this park. If you wait quietly and patiently, you may meet the free-spirited
goral and see how one of nature’s remarkable animals’ lives in this perilous setting.

Trees in the dim and damp cloud forest are covered
in epiphytes – small plants that get most of their
moisture and nutrients from the water, dust and debris
of the trees to which they cling. Epiphytes do no harm
to the tree on which they live. In fact, both gain
advantage in an example for us all about how to share benefits. Many of these epiphytes appear to die during
dry periods but in fact they are only dormant and will
revive themselves when humidity and moisture return
to their surroundings.

This creek has water running through it all year round, even in
the dry season. The water originates from rainfall as well as from
the frequent fogs which create water droplets that drip down from
the foliage and branches. The falling moisture accumulates in the
thick layer of leaves on the forest floor, which acts like a sponge to
hold and then gradually release the water to the stream. The forest
functions as a water tank, supplying water for the Mae Pan Stream
which runs down to join the Ping River and the Chao Praya River.
Water from the Kew Mae Pan watershed nurtures life all the way
along its long journey.

The unique Kew Mae Pan Cloud Forest grows at elevations above
2000 meters, where persistent cloud and fog allow the vegetation to
remain lush and green all year round. Only a limited number of tree
species can grow in this cool, moist and windy environment. These
trees often look like they are wearing sweaters knitted from ferns
and orchids. Due to the dense canopy, only sparse amounts of
sunlight can penetrate to the forest floor, which is covered with dead
foliage.


Cloud forest is a rainfall catchment area which ultimately provides nourishment to all downstream life, including human populations.
This cloud forest provides us with not only a piece of remarkable
natural beauty but also a critical water source. It is the home of
an incredible biodiversity for us to investigate and protect.
