เป็นแหล่งเรียนรู้ “นิเวศวัฒนธรรม” ที่สำคัญของชุมชน
ที่อยู่ร่วมกับผืนป่าต้นน้ำได้อย่างยั่งยืน
In 2022, Electricity Generating Public Company Limited (EGCO
Group) and Thai Conservation of Forest Foundation (Thai Rak Pa),
in collaboration with Doi Inthanon National Park and Ban Mae
Klang Luang Community, renovated Pha Dok Siew Nature Trail.
The upgrade incorporated eco-friendly and sturdy design, including
traditional construction methods of the local Pakakayaw ethnic
group. The result is a trail that ensures visitor safety and reflects
the local knowledge of the resident people. The education
alexperience is provided through wayside interpretation signs and online information resources, giving natural and cultural
perspectives on the area and highlighting the sustainable co-
existence between local people and the precious watershed environment.

เส้นทางศึกษาธรรมชาติฯ ผาดอกเสี้ยวมีจุดเริ่มต้นอยู่ที่
กิโลเมตรที่ 30 ถนนสายจอมทอง-ยอดดอยอินทนนท์ เดินลัด
เลาะผ่านภูมิประเทศที่มีความลาดชัน สภาพป่าตลอดเส้นทาง
เป็นป่าดิบเขาตอนล่างที่สมบูรณ์ น้ำตกและลำธารสวยงาม นา
ขั้นบันไดสะท้อนวิถีชุมชน และไปสิ้นสุดที่หมู่บ้านแม่กลาง
หลวง รวมระยะทาง 2.6 กิโลเมตร ใช้ระยะเวลาในการเดิน
ประมาณ 2 – 2.5 ชั่วโมง

above mean sea level, is located at Ban Mae Klang Luang,
inside Doi Inthanon National Park. It is a unique learning
experience that allows visitors to explore the local forest
ecosystem and the cultural landscape that operates within it,
offering insights into the identity and sustainable livelihood of
the Pakakayaw community, the "people living with the forest".
Pha Dok Siew Nature Trail starts at the Km. 30 marker on
Chom Thong - Yod Doi Inthanon Road. This one-way trail will
lead you down steep terrain through rich hill evergreen forest,
past astonishing waterfalls and terraced rice fields. The 2.6
kilometer trail ends at Mae Klang Luang Village. Allow 2 – 2.5
hours to complete the walk.

ในอดีต ผืนป่าต้นน้ำที่อุดมสมบูรณ์แห่งนี้ เคยเป็นดอย
โล้นโล่งจากป่าถูกทำลายเพื่อใช้ในการปลูกฝิ่น ด้วยพระราช
หฤทัยที่เปี่ยมด้วยความเมตตาของพระบาทสมเด็จพระบรม
ชนกาธิเบศร มหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดชมหาราช บรมนาถบพิตร
ได้ดำเนินการส่งเสริมการประกอบอาชีพโดยการเพาะปลูก
พืชเมืองหนาวและปลูกกาแฟทดแทนฝิ่น เพื่อแก้ปัญหาป่า
ถูกทำลายและแก้ปัญหาปากท้องของกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์ที่อาศัย
อยู่ในพื้นที่ไปพร้อมๆ กัน นำมาซึ่งการจัดตั้งอุทยานแห่ง
ชาติดอยอินนทนนท์ เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2515
ต่อมาใน พ.ศ. 2525 มีการเร่งปลูกป่าทดแทน เพื่อฟื้น
คืนระบบนิเวศที่เสียหาย โดยการปลูกไม้พื้นถิ่นอย่างต้นสน
สามใบ ซึ่งเป็นไม้เบิกนำ โตไว เพื่อให้ความชุ่มชื้นแก่ดินและ
มีสารอาหารเหมาะสมที่เอื้อให้พรรณไม้ชนิดอื่นเติบโตขึ้นมา
ทดแทนในวันข้างหน้า ปัจจุบัน พบไม้โครงสร้างป่าดิบเขา
ระดับล่างเติบโตแทรกกระจายระหว่างต้นสนสามใบ
เป็นการพลิกฟื้นผืนป่าให้กลับคืนมาเป็นป่าที่อุดมสมบูรณ์มี
ความหลากหลายทางชีวภาพได้อีกครั้ง
The fertile lands around us have undergone a remarkable
transformation. They were previously used for opium produc
-tion, a process that damaged the soil quality and the delicate
ecosystem. However, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej cre
-ated a development project to replace the poppy fields with
new crops including temperate fruits, fragrant flowers, and
coffee plants. This initiative didn't just change the landscape; it
transformed for the better the livelihoods of the diverse ethnic

ข้าวตั้งท้อง และทุ่งนาเปลี่ยนเป็นสีทองพร้อมเก็บเกี่ยว
ชุมชนมีประเพณีและความเชื่อที่พึ่งพาสิ่งเหนือธรรมชาติให้
ปกป้องคุ้มครอง วัฒนธรรมแห่งผืนนาจะหมุนเวียนเปลี่ยนไป
เช่นนี้ ตราบที่วิถีดั้งเดิมยังคงดำเนินไป
• มีนาคม - เมษายน พลิกดิน เตรียมปลูกข้าว
• พฤษภาคม ไถพรวน
• มิถุนายน - กรกฎาคม เตรียมปักดำ
พิธี “หลื่อทีเคาะ” ประเพณีเลี้ยงผีฝาย ขอให้มีน้ำอุดม
สมบูรณ์ เพื่อให้ข้าวงอกงามเต็มผืนนา
• สิงหาคม - กันยายน ต้นข้าวงอกงาม
ช่วงเวลานี้มีพิธี “เต่อ เม๊าะ ซิ” ประเพณีเลี้ยงผีนา
เพื่อขอให้ช่วยดูแลขวัญข้าวให้งอกงาม และผลิดอกออก
รวงสำหรับกินได้ตลอดทั้งปี
• ตุลาคม ต้นข้าวตั้งท้อง
• พฤศจิกายน ข้าวออกรวงสีทอง
ชุมชนจะทำพิธีขอบคุณผีน้ำ ผีนา ขอขมาต่อสิ่งทั้งหลาย
และมีงานเฉลิมฉลอง หลังจากเหน็ดเหนื่อยกันมาตลอด
ทั้งปี และมี ประเพณีนวดข้าว หรือ “เพาะ บือ กี่ จือ”
และประเพณีขอข้าว “แซะบือ ส่า
• ธันวาคม - กุมภาพันธ์ ปลูกพืชระยะสั้น
As the seasons shift, so does the rhythm of life within these
fields. The fields awaken; they are plowed and planted with rice
seedlings in a sea of green. Once the plants are fully grown and
ripened, the fields turn golden, ready for harvesting. The com-
munity traditions and beliefs enable the sustainable rice cultiva-
tion but also honor and safeguard the land. The evolving cul-
ture of the terraced rice fields stands as a testament to the en-
during connection between humans and nature.

• June - July: Preparation for transplanting
"Lue Tee Kor" ceremony. This ritual is a way of summoning

After the harvest, a gratitude ritual honors the water spirits
and deities of the paddy field, "Poh Bue Kee Zhi," and high
lighted by the traditional threshing ceremony known as "Sae

Vines and related climbers come in two forms: woody lianas
and softer non-woody climbers. Lianas are the dominant climb-
ers along this nature trail. They ascend nearby trees in pursuit of
the precious sunlight filtering through the forest canopy. Lianas
offer refuge for wildlife such as bats, birds, and insects. Addition-
ally, they act as natural bridges, connecting towering trees and
serving as a vital link between various parts of the forest. Walk
quietly and you may be rewarded with the sight of white-hand-
ed gibbons moving about among the high branches, foraging for
food with their families.
Vines spiral up trees in both left and right directions. Howev-
er, among the Pagagayaw Ethnic group, the belief is that finding
a vine spiraling to the left signifies being lost. The connection
between nature and their livelihood has heightened their

ป่าต้นน้ำที่มีความอุดมสมบูรณ์ และเมื่อตาน้ำหลายๆ แห่ง
ปล่อยน้ำออกมา น้ำก็จะไหลรวมกันเป็นลำห้วย ลำธาร
กลายเป็นแม่น้ำสายใหญ่ที่มีต้นกำเนิดจากตาน้ำเล็กๆ
มากมายในป่า ยิ่งผืนป่ามีขนาดใหญ่มากเท่าใด หมายถึง
ปริมาณน้ำที่ถูกส่งผ่านออกมาจะมากขึ้นเท่านั้น
Beneath this lush forest, the earth acts as a giant sponge,
soaking up rain and gently releasing the life-giving water up
through tiny pores in the forest soil in a process we call capil-
lary action. In areas where the terrain is steep, the forest holds
onto the water even more effectively due to thicker vegetation
cover and more absorbent soil types. But the dominant force
on the water is always gravity, so down at valley floors the ac-
cumulated groundwater pressure can become high enough that
the water bursts forth to the surface as a mountain spring, flow-
ingever downwards.
Numerous mountain springs release water which ultimately
combines to form a river. We can think of this process as the
many voices in a choir, beginning with the soothing tones of the
tiny flows and rivulets, joining and harmonizing into quietly bab-
bling creeks and murmuring streams, before finally reaching the
crescendo, the river - grand chorus of the forest.

Countless large and small creatures thrive together within
this expansive forest realm. Towering forest canopies graciously
filter sunlight through the gaps between leaves to provide scat-
tered light onto the understory below. The understory's resilient
plants firmly anchor the soil, mitigating the erosive impact of
heavy rainfall. Adorning the branches and trunks are mosses,
lichens, and ferns, which not only signal the forest's pristine
condition but also act to slow the flow of water off the trees.
Forests are home to a variety of insects. A tiny but intrigu-
ing one is the stingless bee which lives in tree bark and rock
crevices. The stingless bee plays an important role in pollinating
flowers. Every living organism in the forest plays a distinct role.

The Mountain Ebony, also known as the Orchid Tree (Bau-
hinia variegata L.), adorns the cliffside of this spectacular land-
scape. This remarkable tree, native to the region, draws visitors
to the area with its resplendent flowers that bloom in February
and March. Keep your senses keen, and you might also spot
the shy and mysterious white-handed gibbon. These elusive
creatures call this place home and can be seen year-round by
those who walk the trail with quiet footsteps.
Before us lies a picture of fertility and seasonal beauty – a
harmonious connection between the protected sanctuary of Doi
Inthanon National Park and the local community of the Pa-
kakeyaw ethnic people. Within this landscape lies a complex
fabric of shared sustainable existence founded on belief sys-
tems, cultural heritage, livelihoods, vibrant forest and wildlife,
and the essential nurturing of watersheds.

Water is one of the most powerful forces that shapes our
landscapes. Waterfalls in particular play very important roles in
erosion and sedimentation. Mountain waters accelerate and
gain energy as they run downstream. With the power of gravity
on their side, they can erode and shape the rocks in the river-
bed, while also carrying nutrients and soil particles which are
deposited downstream. Swirling water currents have carved out
potholes in the bedrock here. But the most distinctive feature
of this waterfall is the colorful mineral streaks showing on much
of the bedrock.

The roots of the spectacular Banyan tree spread wide to
grasp across the breadth of large boulders, anchoring the grow-
ing trunk to resist the power of wind and rain. Remarkably, the
tree's roots can extend outwards by up to three times the width
of the overhead canopy. Even in hot and dry weather, the
Banyan tree's roots grow well to ensure the tree can absorb
sufficient water and nutrients for its growth.
Forest tree roots form mutualistic relationships with tiny soil
microorganisms such as mycorrhizal fungi. The cells of tree
roots and these fungi share nutrients with each other in a
win-win relationship for both parties. Trees with mycorrhizal
fungi living in their roots tend to grow faster and can survive
better in challenging conditions. The mechanisms of the root
systems help forest trees thrive in various environments and
weather conditions, turning them into large, shade-providing
trees. Furthermore, the fruits of these trees are essential food
sources for a diverse range of wildlife within the forest, including
birds, squirrels, and white-handed gibbons.

Waterfalls are more than just a picturesque source of fresh
water, but also carry nutrients from mountains to lowlands and
the sea. Water is infused with life-supporting oxygen as it runs
through rocky riverbeds and plunges over cascades. Moreover,
the slow water flows near waterfalls and rapids increases the
moisture levels in the nearby forest, creating a rich freshwater
ecosystem for plants, animals and also people.
The pure waters of the stream are home to a wide range of
creatures, including fish, amphibians, insects, and birds. The
presence of such diverse life is a sign of a healthy freshwater
ecosystem. Walk slowly to see some of the stars of the stream,
such as the tiny Pearl Danio minnow (Danio albolineata), the
Common Blind Cave Loach (Schistura dubius) Smith's Litter Frog
(Leptobrachium smithi). and Plumbeous Redstart (Rhyacornis
Fuliginosa).

ต้นเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2517 จากพระราชดำริของพระบาทสมเด็จ
พระบรมชนกาธิเบศร มหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดชมหาราช บรม
นาถบพิตร ณ บ้านหนองหล่ม หมู่บ้านชาวปกาเกอะญอ
แห่งแรกๆ บนดอยอินทนนท์ที่ได้รับการส่งเสริมอาชีพและ
รายได้บนพื้นที่สูงด้วยการปลูกกาแฟและพืชเมืองหนาวเพื่อ
ทดแทนการทำไร่ฝิ่น โดยต่อมา ได้มีการพัฒนาและขยาย
พื้นที่ปลูกกาแฟพันธุ์อาราบิกามาสู่พื้นที่บ้านแม่กลางหลวง
ด้วยเช่นกัน
ต้นกาแฟที่นี่เติบโตภายใต้ร่มเงาของไม้ใหญ่ ในป่าที่มี
พรรณไม้หลากหลาย อากาศเย็น ดินมีความชุ่มชื้น ทำให้
ผลผลิตมีคุณภาพดี นับเป็นวิถีวนเกษตรอันเข้มแข็งของ
ชุมชน เป็นการทำเกษตรที่เกื้อกูลต่อธรรมชาติและรักษา
สมดุลของระบบนิเวศ และเนื่องจากกาแฟเติบโตได้ดีใต้ร่ม
เงาของไม้ใหญ่ “กาแฟรักษ์ป่า” จึงเป็นผลพลอยได้ในการ
ฟื้นฟูป่าให้กลับมาอุดมสมบูรณ์อีกทางหนึ่งด้วย
Coffee trees first arrived at Baan Nong Lom in the Pakakayaw
village in 1974, through the initiative of His Majesty King Bhumi-
bol Adulyadej. The coffee trees were seen as a promising
option, due to their shade tolerance and lasting economic
value, and were planted along with temperate fruits and vege-
tables to help the area leave opium production behind and
become more stable and self-reliant. Subsequently, coffee
plantations extended here into the Baan Mae Klang Luang vil-
lage.
Coffee trees grow well alongside other plant species in the
shade of large forest trees. The cool temperatures and fertile
moist soils allow production of high quality coffee beans. This
method of growing coffee contributes to the restoration of de-
graded forest areas, making them fertile again and supporting
various other life forms in the forest.

ภาคภูมิใจของคนรุ่นก่อน ที่ส่งไม้ต่อสู่คนรุ่นต่อไป รุ่นแล้ว

The story of a community that has cared for the land and
its natural resources for the benefit of past, present, and future
generations is not a myth. It’s a tangible reality, confirmed by
our 2.6 km. journey today. The landscape we see today at Pha
Dok Siao was made possible by the effort of previous genera-
tions. Their pride now passes to us and future generations as an
obligation to protect our natural and cultural heritage amid the
changing tides of time. We ask all visitors to listen, to appreci-
ate, and to encourage all our communities to be strong and
economic pressures on forests, so we can continue to safeguard
the pristine watershed forest of Pha Dok Siao and others like it.

Water flows from Doi Inthanon's summit, cascading down a
20-meter cliff at Pha Dok Siew Waterfall. A gentle mist blankets
the rocky layers, creating a super-moist habitat for mosses,
ferns, and lion orchids or The Fox Red Lip Bulbophyllum. While
the water's force, sounds, and visual beauty often overwhelm
our senses, there's a scientific aspect to this experience. Re-
search shows that the falling water droplets release negative
ions into the air, boosting oxygen flow to our brains, reducing
stress, and enhancing mood.
The waterfall before us is very well known to Thai visitors as it
was the backdrop for the 2013 Thai film "The Memory". Fol-
lowing the film's success, the waterfall took on the Thai name
of the movie, "Ruk Jung" which means "profound love". The
phrase perfectly captures the affection that locals have for this
waterfall and the surrounding forest, highlighting their strong
commitment to conserving this precious natural resource.
This wooden bridge was renovated in 2022. Traditional local
knowledge was used to ensure strength while keeping a natural
aesthetic and minimizing its ecological footprint. Steadfast ele-
vated bamboo bridges are essential during flashfloods in the
rainy season. Steel reinforcement cables inside the bamboo
poles give the bridge the strength to carry the weight of visitors.

White-handed gibbons are often heard or seen up in the
treetops at certain points along this trail. These impressive pri-
mates are found only in fertile forests with connected canopies
and abundant fruit trees. Their role in seed dispersal is crucial,
as they assist in the propagation of fruit trees through their
droppings. However, the white-handed gibbon population faces
significant threats – their numbers are in decline due to poach-
ing and the impact of climate change. As droughts become
more frequent, there is less ripe fruit on the trees, meaning that
their main food source is gradually diminishing.
The indigenous Pagagayaw hilltribes believe that gibbons are
humans who existed in the forest long before people arrived.

Countless large and small creatures thrive together within
this expansive forest realm. Towering forest canopies graciously
filter sunlight through the gaps between leaves to provide scat-
tered light onto the understory below. The understory's resilient plants firmly anchor the soil, mitigating the erosive impact of
heavy rainfall. Adorning the branches and trunks are mosses, li-
chens, and ferns, which not only signal the forest's pristine con-
dition but also act to slow the flow of water off the trees.
FForests are home to a variety of insects. A tiny but intrigu-
ing one is the stingless bee which lives in tree bark and rock
crevices. The stingless bee plays an important role in pollinating flowers. Every living organism in the forest plays a distinct role.
Even after death their contribution continues, as their decom-
posed carcasses enrich the soil so, they continue to support the ecosystem.

The story of a community that has cared for the land and
its natural resources for the benefit of past, present, and future generations is not a myth. It’s a tangible reality, confirmed by
our 2.6 km. journey today. The landscape we see today at Pha
Dok Siao was made possible by the effort of previous genera-
tions. Their pride now passes to us and future generations as an obligation to protect our natural and cultural heritage amid the changing tides of time. We ask all visitors to listen, to appreci-
ate, and to encourage all our communities to be strong and economic pressures on forests, so we can continue to safeguard
the pristine watershed forest of Pha Dok Siao and others like it.

As the seasons shift, so does the rhythm of life within these
fields. The fields awaken; they are plowed and planted with rice seedlings in a sea of green. Once the plants are fully grown and ripened, the fields turn golden, ready for harvesting. The com-
munity traditions and beliefs enable the sustainable rice cultiva-
tion but also honor and safeguard the land. The evolving cul-
ture of the terraced rice fields stands as a testament to the en-
during connection between humans and nature.

"Lue Tee Kor" ceremony. This ritual is a way of summoning
the water spirits to ensure bountiful rainfall, ensuring an
abundant harvest.

rice spirits to nurture the rice.

After the harvest, a gratitude ritual honors the water spirits
and deities of the paddy field, "Poh Bue Kee Zhi," and high
lighted by the traditional threshing ceremony known as "Sae
Bue Sa." This tradition marks the end of a year's hard work.

Water flows from Doi Inthanon's summit, cascading down a
20-meter cliff at Pha Dok Siew Waterfall. A gentle mist blankets
the rocky layers, creating a super-moist habitat for mosses,
ferns, and lion orchids or The Fox Red Lip Bulbophyllum. While
the water's force, sounds, and visual beauty often overwhelm
our senses, there's a scientific aspect to this experience. Re-
search shows that the falling water droplets release negative
ions into the air, boosting oxygen flow to our brains, reducing
stress, and enhancing mood.
The waterfall before us is very well known to Thai visitors as
it was the backdrop for the 2013 Thai film "The Memory". Fol-
lowing the film's success, the waterfall took on the Thai name
of the movie, "Ruk Jung" which means "profound love". The
phrase perfectly captures the affection that locals have for this waterfall and the surrounding forest, highlighting their strong commitment to conserving this precious natural resource.
This wooden bridge was renovated in 2022. Traditional local knowledge was used to ensure strength while keeping a natural aesthetic and minimizing its ecological footprint. Steadfast ele-
vated bamboo bridges are essential during flashfloods in the
rainy season. Steel reinforcement cables inside the bamboo
poles give the bridge the strength to carry the weight of visi-
tors.

The Mountain Ebony, also known as the Orchid Tree (Bau-
hinia variegata L.), adorns the cliffside of this spectacular land-
scape. This remarkable tree, native to the region, draws visitors
to the area with its resplendent flowers that bloom in February
and March. Keep your senses keen, and you might also spot
the shy and mysterious white-handed gibbon. These elusive
creatures call this place home and can be seen year-round by
those who walk the trail with quiet footsteps.
Before us lies a picture of fertility and seasonal beauty – a harmonious connection between the protected sanctuary of Doi Inthanon National Park and the local community of the Pa-
kakeyaw ethnic people. Within this landscape lies a complex
fabric of shared sustainable existence founded on belief sys-
tems, cultural heritage, livelihoods, vibrant forest and wildlife,
and the essential nurturing of watersheds.

Water is one of the most powerful forces that shapes our landscapes. Waterfalls in particular play very important roles in erosion and sedimentation. Mountain waters accelerate and
gain energy as they run downstream. With the power of gravity
on their side, they can erode and shape the rocks in the river-
bed, while also carrying nutrients and soil particles which are deposited downstream. Swirling water currents have carved out potholes in the bedrock here. But the most distinctive feature
of this waterfall is the colorful mineral streaks showing on much
of the bedrock.

The roots of the spectacular Banyan tree spread wide to
grasp across the breadth of large boulders, anchoring the grow-
ing trunk to resist the power of wind and rain. Remarkably, the
tree's roots can extend outwards by up to three times the width
of the overhead canopy. Even in hot and dry weather, the
Banyan tree's roots grow well to ensure the tree can absorb suf-
ficient water and nutrients for its growth.
Forest tree roots form mutualistic relationships with tiny soil microorganisms such as mycorrhizal fungi. The cells of tree
roots and these fungi share nutrients with each other in a
win-win relationship for both parties. Trees with mycorrhizal
fungi living in their roots tend to grow faster and can survive
better in challenging conditions. The mechanisms of the root
systems help forest trees thrive in various environments and
weather conditions, turning them into large, shade-providing
trees. Furthermore, the fruits of these trees are essential food sources for a diverse range of wildlife within the forest, including birds, squirrels, and white-handed gibbons.

Waterfalls are more than just a picturesque source of fresh
water, but also carry nutrients from mountains to lowlands and
the sea. Water is infused with life-supporting oxygen as it runs
through rocky riverbeds and plunges over cascades. Moreover,
the slow water flows near waterfalls and rapids increases the moisture levels in the nearby forest, creating a rich freshwater ecosystem for plants, animals and also people.
The pure waters of the stream are home to a wide range of creatures, including fish, amphibians, insects, and birds. The
presence of such diverse life is a sign of a healthy freshwater ecosystem. Walk slowly to see some of the stars of the stream,
such as the tiny Pearl Danio minnow (Danio albolineata), the Common Blind Cave Loach (Schistura dubius) Smith's Litter Frog (Leptobrachium smithi). and Plumbeous Redstart (Rhyacornis Fuliginosa).

ers along this nature trail. They ascend nearby trees in pursuit of
the precious sunlight filtering through the forest canopy. Lianas
offer refuge for wildlife such as bats, birds, and insects. Addition-
ally, they act as natural bridges, connecting towering trees and serving as a vital link between various parts of the forest. Walk quietly and you may be rewarded with the sight of white-hand-
ed gibbons moving about among the high branches, foraging for
food with their families.
Vines spiral up trees in both left and right directions. Howev-
er, among the Pagagayaw Ethnic group, the belief is that finding
a vine spiraling to the left signifies being lost. The connection between nature and their livelihood has heightened their
awareness of the importance of forest conservation.

ต้นเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2517 จากพระราชดำริของพระบาทสมเด็จ
พระบรมชนกาธิเบศร มหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดชมหาราช บรม
นาถบพิตร ณ บ้านหนองหล่ม หมู่บ้านชาวปกาเกอะญอ
แห่งแรกๆ บนดอยอินทนนท์ที่ได้รับการส่งเสริมอาชีพและ
รายได้บนพื้นที่สูงด้วยการปลูกกาแฟและพืชเมืองหนาวเพื่อ
ทดแทนการทำไร่ฝิ่น โดยต่อมา ได้มีการพัฒนาและขยาย
พื้นที่ปลูกกาแฟพันธุ์อาราบิกามาสู่พื้นที่บ้านแม่กลางหลวง
ด้วยเช่นกัน
ต้นกาแฟที่นี่เติบโตภายใต้ร่มเงาของไม้ใหญ่ ในป่าที่มี
พรรณไม้หลากหลาย อากาศเย็น ดินมีความชุ่มชื้น ทำให้
ผลผลิตมีคุณภาพดี นับเป็นวิถีวนเกษตรอันเข้มแข็งของ
ชุมชน เป็นการทำเกษตรที่เกื้อกูลต่อธรรมชาติและรักษา
สมดุลของระบบนิเวศ และเนื่องจากกาแฟเติบโตได้ดีใต้ร่ม
เงาของไม้ใหญ่ “กาแฟรักษ์ป่า” จึงเป็นผลพลอยได้ในการ
ฟื้นฟูป่าให้กลับมาอุดมสมบูรณ์อีกทางหนึ่งด้วย
Coffee trees first arrived at Baan Nong Lom in the Pakakayaw village in 1974, through the initiative of His Majesty King Bhumi-
bol Adulyadej. The coffee trees were seen as a promising
option, due to their shade tolerance and lasting economic
value, and were planted along with temperate fruits and vege
tables to help the area leave opium production behind and
become more stable and self-reliant. Subsequently, coffee plantations extended here into the Baan Mae Klang Luang vil-
lage.
Coffee trees grow well alongside other plant species in the
shade of large forest trees. The cool temperatures and fertile
moist soils allow production of high quality coffee beans. This method of growing coffee contributes to the restoration of de-graded forest areas, making them fertile again and supporting
various other life forms in the forest.
ใต้ผืนป่าต้นน้ำอันอุดมสมบูรณ์ สภาพผืนดินจะร่วนซุย
และสามารถดูดซับความชื้นได้มากขึ้น เปรียบเสมือนฟองน้ำ
ของป่าที่คอยดูดซับน้ำไว้ให้มีความชุ่มชื้นตลอดทั้งปี ความชื้นที่ดินดูดซับไว้นั้น เมื่อเกิดการอิ่มตัว ดินจะค่อยๆ คายน้ำผ่านชั้นดิน หากสภาพภูมิประเทศมีความสูงหรือลาด
ชันมากๆ โดยเฉพาะตามร่องเขาที่มาบรรจบกัน น้ำใต้ดินจะ
ไหลมารวมกัน หรือที่เรียกว่า “น้ำซับ” จนมีมวลมากพอที่
จะดันออกมาจากชั้นดินโดยอาศัยแรงโน้มถ่วง
น้ำซับจากหลายๆ ยอดเขามารวมกัน จะมีตาน้ำผุดขึ้น
มา ซึ่ง “ตาน้ำ” คือน้ำซับลักษณะหนึ่งที่พบมากมายในผืน
ป่าต้นน้ำที่มีความอุดมสมบูรณ์ และเมื่อตาน้ำหลายๆ แห่ง
ปล่อยน้ำออกมา น้ำก็จะไหลรวมกันเป็นลำห้วย ลำธาร กลายเป็นแม่น้ำสายใหญ่ที่มีต้นกำเนิดจากตาน้ำเล็กๆ
มากมายในป่า ยิ่งผืนป่ามีขนาดใหญ่มากเท่าใด หมายถึง
ปริมาณน้ำที่ถูกส่งผ่านออกมาจะมากขึ้นเท่านั้น
Beneath this lush forest, the earth acts as a giant sponge,
soaking up rain and gently releasing the life-giving water up
through tiny pores in the forest soil in a process we call capil-
lary action. In areas where the terrain is steep, the forest holds
onto the water even more effectively due to thicker vegetation
cover and more absorbent soil types. But the dominant force
on the water is always gravity, so down at valley floors the ac-
cumulated groundwater pressure can become high enough that
the water bursts forth to the surface as a mountain spring, flow-
ing ever downwards.
Numerous mountain springs release water which ultimately combines to form a river. We can think of this process as the
many voices in a choir, beginning with the soothing tones of the
tiny flows and rivulets, joining and harmonizing into quietly bab-
bling creeks and murmuring streams, before finally reaching the crescendo, the river - grand chorus of the forest.

พืชเมืองหนาวและปลูกกาแฟทดแทนฝิ่น เพื่อแก้ปัญหาป่า
ถูกทำลายและแก้ปัญหาปากท้องของกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์ที่อาศัย
อยู่ในพื้นที่ไปพร้อมๆ กัน นำมาซึ่งการจัดตั้งอุทยานแห่ง
ชาติดอยอินนทนนท์ เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2515
ต่อมาใน พ.ศ. 2525 มีการเร่งปลูกป่าทดแทน เพื่อฟื้น
คืนระบบนิเวศที่เสียหาย โดยการปลูกไม้พื้นถิ่นอย่างต้นสน
สามใบ ซึ่งเป็นไม้เบิกนำ โตไว เพื่อให้ความชุ่มชื้นแก่ดินและ
มีสารอาหารเหมาะสมที่เอื้อให้พรรณไม้ชนิดอื่นเติบโตขึ้นมา
ทดแทนในวันข้างหน้า ปัจจุบัน พบไม้โครงสร้างป่าดิบเขา
ระดับล่างเติบโตแทรกกระจายระหว่างต้นสนสามใบ เป็นการพลิกฟื้นผืนป่าให้กลับคืนมาเป็นป่าที่อุดมสมบูรณ์
มีความหลากหลายทางชีวภาพได้อีกครั้ง
The fertile lands around us have undergone a remarkable transformation. They were previously used for opium produc-
tion, a process that damaged the soil quality and the delicate ecosystem. However, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej cre-
ated a development project to replace the poppy fields with
new crops including temperate fruits, fragrant flowers, and
coffee plants. This initiative didn't just change the landscape; it transformed for the better the livelihoods of the diverse ethnic groups who live here. The establishment of Doi Inthanon Na-
tional Park in 1972 further added to the restoration efforts, safe-guarding water sources and nurturing the soil, benefiting com-
munities who live both upstream and downstream.
In 1982 the bare dry land in this area was replanted with
three-needled pine (Pinus kesiya). Why plant pine trees, you
may wonder? At the time, pine trees were being planted in the hopes they could be a resilient pioneer species to jumpstart the natural reforestation process. And it worked! The dry evergreen forest ecosystem, once struggling, found new life beneath the
rapidly growing pines. Provided with improved soil fertility and necessary shade, saplings of the original tree species were able
to persevere and ultimately flourish once more.
