ต้นไม้มีกลไกการ ปรับตัวในอากาศหนาวเย็น อาทิ ต้นทะโล้

Outstanding Geological, Historical and Ecological Values of Doi Inthanon National Park
Welcome to the ‘Forest of the sky’ trail. Along the way you will
experience the natural beauty of a forested mountain summit, learn
how trees and plants have adapted to cold temperatures and see
the elevation marker for the highest point in Thailand. You will also
see the highly adaptable Thalo tree, the most widespread forest
tree in Asia. Look out also for the stupa containing relics of Prince Inthavichayanon, the 7th Prince who ruled Chiang Mai.
The trail is an easy 150 m of walking, steep in the early stages

to the high elevation. The trail is often shrouded in fog in winter

The trail is an easy 150 m of walking, steep in

elevation. The trail is often shrouded in fog in
winter while rain showers and chilly winds can arrive
at any time in the wet season. Take plenty of

Doi Inthanon National Park cooperated with the
Thai Rak Pa Foundation, a charity organization
founded and supported by the Electricity
Generating Public Company Limited (EGCO Group),
to build the wooden boardwalks along the trail.

ป่าเมฆ บนยอดดอยแห่งนี้ มีเมฆและหมอกมาก แสงจึง
ส่องไปไม่ถึงพื้นป่า มีเพียงบางจุดที่เป็นพื้นโล่ง แสงสว่างตกถึง
โดยตรง จุลินทรีย์ในดินจึงย่อยสลายซากพืชได้ยาก ดินจึงเป็น
กรดจัด ต้นไม้ที่ถูกคัดเลือกโดยธรรมชาติ ณ จุดนี้ มีสองชนิด คือ
ต้นแข้งไก่ ที่ขึ้นเป็นผืนใหญ่ ปรับตัวด้วยการสร้างสีเขียวเข้มที่ใบ
ด้านบน เพื่อสังเคราะห์แสงในแสงรำไร ใต้ใบสีเขียวนวล ช่วย
สะท้อนแสงให้ใบข้างเคียง และสร้างสีเขียวที่ลำต้น ให้ช่วย
สังเคราะห์แสง เมื่ออายุ 3 - 5 ปี จะออกดอกผล ทิ้งลงพื้นป่า
แล้วตายยกผืน พักตัวนาน 2 ปี จึงกลับฟื้นขึ้นใหม่
ส่วนบริเวณพื้นป่าที่โล่ง แสงดี ต้นผักปราบเครือ จะสร้าง
ลำต้นตรงในระยะแรก แล้วเปลี่ยนเป็นไม้เลื้อย และปรับตัวให้
อยู่ได้ท่ามกลางฝน หมอกจัด ด้วยการเคลือบใบด้วยขี้ผึ้ง ให้ลม
พัดผ่านได้ดี สร้างใบเป็นรูปหัวใจ ปลายใบเรียวแหลมยาว ให้
หมอกและน้ำฝนไหลผ่านตามร่องเส้นใบ และใช้แรงตึงผิวของ
ติ่งหยดน้ำที่ปลายใบ เสริมไม่ให้น้ำเกาะบนใบมากเกินไป
Clouds and fog often diminish the sunlight shining to the forest
floor, which not only makes photosynthesis difficult but also means
that decomposition of fallen twigs and leaves is slow, leading to high soil acidity. There are 2 plant species that stand out as being superbly adapted to withstand these harsh conditions. First is ‘kaenggai’ or
‘flame flower’, which carpets the forest floor, capturing the dim light with its dark green leaves. Even the stem contains light - capturing pigments. The profusion of ‘kaenggai’ will flower en masse every 3
- 5 years and then die off, but always returns to thrive once more.
In more open spaces where light is plentiful, spreading dayflower
or water grass is also prominent. It copes with the extremely wet
and foggy environment with specialized leaves that can shed water
very efficiently. The wax - coated leaves have a heart - like shape
with an elongated ‘drip - tip’ so water runs off quickly before the
leaf is damaged by the weight.
ยอดดอยอินทนนท์ มีสภาพอากาศที่รุนแรง หนาวจัด ฝนตก
ชุก หมอกลงนานหลายเดือน ต้นไม้ใหญ่จึงดำรงชีพด้วยการแตก
กิ่งให้มาก และคดหยัก สร้างใบเล็กหนาเคลือบขี้ผึ้งกันน้ำระเหย
ก้านใบสั้น แตกใบเป็นกระจุกแน่น เพื่อให้ลมพัดผ่านได้ดี แต่มี
บ้างที่ถูกลมริดกิ่งใบ เห็นเป็น ร่องรอยบอกทิศทางลมได้
ต้นไม้ มีกล้วยไม้ ไลเคน และมอสส์เกาะอยู่ กล้วยไม้ดูดน้ำที่
ไหลมาตามลำต้น และได้อาหารจากผืนมอสส์ที่ช่วยดักตะกอน
ลำต้น สามารถเก็บน้ำไว้ใช้ในช่วงแล้ง ส่วนต้นฝอยลม ไลเคนสี
เหลืองอ่อน ลักษณะเป็นเส้นๆ รวมตัวเป็นกลุ่ม ห้อยรับลมตาม
กิ่งไม้ ไลเคนเป็นสิ่งมีชีวิตที่พึ่งพาอาศัยกันระหว่างราและ
สาหร่าย ราจะเก็บความชื้น ในอากาศ และเก็บฝุ่นละอองให้
สาหร่ายสีเขียวแกมน้ำเงินสังเคราะห์แสงปรุงอาหาร เมื่อ
สาหร่ายตาย ราก็กินเป็นอาหาร
The summit of Doi Inthanon has an extreme climate including
persistent winds, frequent storms and very high moisture levels. It is
easy to see the prevailing wind direction from the shape of the trees
at the forest edges. To defend against the winds, many trees leave frequent gaps in their foliage allowing strong winds to blow through without stressing the tree. Other trees grow strong buttress roots for physical support and have leathery flexible leaves that can bend
with the breeze without breaking. Many plants also shield their
leaves with a layer of wax to reduce wind - induced moisture loss.
Wax on the leaves is also helpful for repelling water. Extreme
build - up of tiny fog droplets on leaves can restrict gas exchange essential for photosynthesis. Many plants have leaves with wax or
other specialized coatings and textures to repel water and ‘breathe
easy’ in the wet.
ในป่าที่พื้นดินมีแสงรำไร ต้นไม้แย่งกันหาน้ำ ธาตุอาหาร และ
แสงแดด เพื่อใช้ในการดำรงชีวิต เฟิร์นกลุ่มหนึ่งกลับหนีจากข้อ
จำกัดนี้ โดยปรับตัวเป็นพืชอิงอาศัย ขึ้นมาอยู่บนต้นไม้ที่มี
แสงแดดมากกว่า มีลมพัดพาสปอร์ช่วยกระจายพันธุ์ ปรับเปลี่ยน
วิถีชีวิตให้กินน้อย ดูดน้ำ ธาตุอาหาร จากอากาศ และน้ำที่ไหล
ตามลำต้น และจากผืนมอสส์ที่ช่วยดักตะกอนตามต้นไม้ เมื่อถึง
หน้าแล้งขาดแคลนน้ำ จะหยุดการเติบโต ทำใบให้หงิกงอ เพื่อ

All plants that live on the forest floor must compete for limited
light, water and nutrition. However, one type of ferns has moved
away from this endless struggle by learning to live up on tree
branches, where they can catch more light and use of the wind to disperse their spores. But these ferns pay for their height advantage by losing access to nutrition - they are forced into a minimalist lifestyle,
living on mere traces of minerals and moisture from the tree bark, air
and patches of moss. In the dry periods when moisture is scarce,
the ferns will aestivate - shrinking their leaves, lowering respiration
and ceasing photosynthesis. Amazingly, the ferns come ‘back to life’ when the moisture levels improve.

แถบภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ ถึงฝนตกชุก ในจังหวัดระนอง
รวมถึงสภาพภูมิประเทศที่เป็นที่ราบ ที่ลาดเขาสูงชัน ตั้งแต่
ชายทะเลจนถึงยอดเขาสูง 3,000 เมตร และยังพบทะโล้ใน
ประเทศจีน ที่สภาพอากาศหนาว ไปจนถึงเกาะชวา ประเทศ

Thalo is a highly gifted tree able to grow in many kinds of climates and soil types. In Thailand, it is found in the dry northeast region as well as in monsoon (high - rainfall) areas further south, such as
Ranong Province. It grows equally well on flat and sloping land, at various elevations, from beach zones up to mountain sides at 3,000 meters above sea level. Thalo thrives in porous soils, but also does well in muddy or sandy ground or around ponds and alongside waterways. Whether the land is fertile or infertile, we can find thalo
- it’s a friend to many, putting its roots down through Thailand and
right across East and Southeast Asia, from China to Indonesia.
“ป่าเมฆ” เต็มไปด้วยต้นไม้สูงใหญ่ ความสูงใกล้เคียงกัน
เติบโต อย่างหนาแน่น บางปีมีลมพายุพัดแรง ต้นไม้ถูกหักโค่น
ทำให้ป่าเปิดโล่งเป็นหย่อม ป่าเมฆในระดับพื้นดิน มีเพียงต้นไม้
ขนาดเล็ก มองดูคล้ายมีผืนพรมสีเขียวขนาดใหญ่ปกคลุมอยู่ กิ่ง
และลำต้นเหมือนใส่เสื้อที่ทำมาจาก ไลเคน มอสส์ เฟิร์น และ
กล้วยไม
ป่าเมฆยอดดอย มีสภาพอากาศหนาวเย็น ฝนตกชุก หมอกจัด
นานหลายเดือน มีแสงแดดไม่ตลอดทั้งวัน ดินเป็นกรด ทำให้
ธรรมชาติเลือกสรรพันธุ์ไม้ใหญ่ไม่กี่ชนิด ที่ปรับตัวเติบโตได้ เช่น
ต้นทะโล้ หว้าอ่างกา ก่อหมวก และเหมือดคนดำ แตกต่างจาก
ป่าดงดิบเขาที่อยู่ตอนกลางเขา ซึ่งสภาพดินฟ้าอากาศไม่รุนแรง
จึงมีพันธุ์ไม้กว่า 200 ชนิด ขึ้นรกทึบ
Although overhead foliage is rather thick, at ground level the
forest is quite spacious and easy to walk through. The floor is
covered with a carpet of green and the branches are adorned with
mosses, ferns, lichens and orchids. The gusty winds have shaped
the canopy and sometimes brought down whole trees to create open
spaces. It seems that the forest was planned and decorated by a
virtuoso designer, who carefully selected species of plants and trees
that would grow well in the cool temperatures, high moisture, acidic
soils and dim light.
In fact, the forest is nothing more than a response to the local
climate and elevation. Only a few tree species can with stand the
severe conditions near the mountain summit including thalo, Schimawallichiichoisy, Syzygiumangkae, Quercusvestita Griff and
Heliciopsis terminalis Sleum. This contrasts with more than 200 tree
species found in the much more forgiving conditions lower down at
the mid - section of Doi Inthanon.

All plants that live on the forest floor must
compete for limited light, water and nutrition.
However, one type of ferns has moved away from this endless struggle by learning to live up on tree
branches, where they can catch more light and use of
the wind to disperse their spores. But these ferns pay
for their height advantage by losing access to
nutrition - they are forced into a minimalist lifestyle, living on mere traces of minerals and moisture from the tree bark, air and patches of moss. In the dry periods when moisture is scarce, the ferns will aestivate - shrinking
their leaves, lowering respiration and ceasing
photosynthesis. Amazingly, the ferns come ‘back to
life’ when the moisture levels improve.

ปรับตัวเติบโตได้ เช่น ต้นทะโล้ หว้าอ่างกา ก่อหมวก และ
เหมือดคนดำ แตกต่างจากป่าดงดิบเขาที่อยู่ตอนกลาง
เขา ซึ่งสภาพดินฟ้าอากาศไม่รุนแรง จึงมีพันธุ์ไม้กว่า
200 ชนิด ขึ้นรกทึบ
Although overhead foliage is rather thick, at ground
level the forest is quite spacious and easy to walk
through. The floor is covered with a carpet of green
and the branches are adorned with mosses, ferns,
lichens and orchids. The gusty winds have shaped the canopy and sometimes brought down whole trees to
create open spaces. It seems that the forest was planned and decorated by a virtuoso designer, who carefully
selected species of plants and trees that would grow
well in the cool temperatures, high moisture, acidic
soils and dim light.
In fact, the forest is nothing more than a response to
the local climate and elevation. Only a few tree species
can with stand the severe conditions near the
mountain summit including thalo, Schimawallichiichoisy, Syzygiumangkae, Quercusvestita Griff and Heliciopsis
terminalis Sleum. This contrasts with more than 200
tree species found in the much more forgiving
conditions lower down at the mid - section of Doi
Inthanon.

Ecological Values of Doi Inthanon National Park
Welcome to the ‘Forest of the sky’ trail. Along the
way you will experience the natural beauty of a
forested mountain summit, learn how trees and plants have adapted to cold temperatures and see the
elevation marker for the highest point in Thailand. You
will also see the highly adaptable Thalo tree, the most widespread forest tree in Asia. Look out also for the stupa containing relics of Prince Inthavichayanon, the 7thPrince who ruled Chiang Mai.
The trail is an easy 150 m of walking, steep in the early stages but mostly flat thereafter. The weather is cool all year round due to the high elevation. The trail
is often shrouded in fog in winter while rain showers and chilly winds can arrive at any time in the wet season. Take plenty of pictures to keep your memories and be ready to note down your impressions to about this remarkable cloud forest at the highest point in Thailand.

Placenames in Thailand often have a relation to the
local history and distinctive identity of the area. The
meaning of this forest’s name, ‘Krung Ching’, is related
to a species of palm tree that was once dominant here
– the Ching tree. The Ching tree was well-loved since
it provided valuable shelter for ancient travelers.

การสู้รบมักถูกโจมตีด้วยเครื่องบินทิ้งระเบิดและปืน

This location was an old resistance camp that
served as a command center and gathering point.
Cave, with its collapsed roof, provided an observation
point as well as a place to shelter from overhead
surveillance. Up to 100 people could hide in the
lower sections of the cave. The name of the cave was
‘Don Muang’.

The extremely soft and acidic soil in and nearby the
creeks, where only a few specially-adapted plants can
grow. Only trees with buttress roots and strong root
systems can anchor themselves in the soft soil and
withstand heavy flooding.
Creeks and wetland areas in the forest are home to
many forms of life, with insects being the most
prominent. Aquatic insects are central to the food
chain and have important functions in the ecosystem.

All living organisms and non-living matter have a
beneficial effect on the forest. Some creatures have
the specific role to decompose and digest the dead
biomatter into smaller elements, returning it back to
soil where it can be used as food to support the
ecosystem. Specialist decomposers include insects,
reptiles, fungi, and bacteria. Balance is crucial in the
ecosystem.
ต้นไม้ที่นี่ มักมีลำต้นที่ถูกปกคลุมไปด้วยมอสส์ บางครั้ง
พบเห็นเป็นสายยาวห้อยลงมาจากต้นไม้ มอสส์ใช้ใบดูดน้ำและ
แร่ธาตุโดยตรงจากอากาศ ลำต้นขนาดเล็กขึ้นเบียดกัน เพื่อช่วย
กักเก็บน้ำและหมอก

The tree trunks here are draped with mosses, tiny ancient plants
whose ancestors were the first to move out of primordial
algae - filled seas onto the land. The mosses hug the trunk surfaces
in dense green clumps of microscopic foliage with dangling wisps.
Mosses are also found in drier lowland forests, but here in the
Forest of the Sky they grow to larger size and impose themselves on
the forest - scape. Rootless, they absorb moisture directly through
their leaves, thriving in the perpetually dripping fog and frequent
rain. Thanks to their low nutrient needs and specialized growth
strategies, mosses can live on vertical tree bark or rocks.

ดอยหลวง จึงได้รับสั่งไว้ว่า หากพระองค์ถึงแก่พิราลัยแล้วให้นำอัฐิ
มาไว้ ณ ยอดดอยหลวง ราชธิดา คือ เจ้าดารารัศมี (ราชชายาใน
รัชกาลที่ 5) จึงได้อัญเชิญพระอังคารของพระเจ้าอินทวิชยานนท์
มาประดิษฐาน ณ พระสถูป บนยอดดอยหลวง เพื่อเป็นสักการะ
บูชาของชาวเขาและประชาชนทั่วไป ดอยหลวง หรือ ดอยอ่างกา
จึงเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น “ดอยอินทนนท์” ตั้งแต่บัดนั้นเป็นต้นมา
King Inthawichayanon, the 7th King of Chiang Mai, loved the forest,
especially the highest watershed of the Chiang Mai Realm. He
ordered that his remains be laid to rest on the peak of his beloved
mountain, Doi Luang. His daughter, Princess Dara Rasmi (also the
consort to King Rama V) built the pagoda to hold her father’s
remains at the summit following his death in 1897. The name of the
mountain was changed to Inthanon to honor his name.

Fon San Ha Waterfall is the most beautiful waterfall
in the park. The flow of water over the waterfall varies
from season to season. These waters of the Krung
Ching Creek originate in the fertile upper forests of
Khao Luang National Park, providing water to nourish
communities downstream and ultimately send nutrients
to sustain marine life in the Thai Gulf.
